About Largo
Largo takes its name from Lake Largo, earlier recorded as Lake Tolulu, which was drained in 1916. The city incorporated in 1905 and was known for decades as Citrus City before postwar industry and growth turned it into a commuter community. It had about 82,000 residents in 2020.
Most of Largo is inland, but it touches Tampa Bay to the northeast and the Intracoastal Waterway to the southwest. McKay Creek flows through southwest Largo to the Intracoastal and is known for flooding, while Allen's Creek drains the northeast toward Tampa Bay.
Largo's waterfront and its walls
Largo's waterfront is a small share of a large city, concentrated near the Intracoastal and along the creeks. Creek-side walls deal with freshwater flooding from upstream as well as tides, which is less common elsewhere in the county.

Largo seawall questions
Who issues building permits in Largo?
The City of Largo Building Services at 201 Highland Ave, (727) 586-7488, for addresses inside city limits. Seawalls go through the County's Water and Navigation section.
Does Largo have Gulf frontage?
No. Its waterfront is on the Intracoastal to the southwest and Tampa Bay to the northeast, plus the creeks that feed them.
Why does McKay Creek flood?
The creek collects runoff from a large inland area. Heavy rain at high tide can back it up, which affects walls along it.
