Tarpon Springs at a glance
Settled around 1876, Tarpon Springs was incorporated in February 1887 as the first city in what is now Pinellas County. The name is said to come from an early settler's remark about tarpon, though the fish jumping in the bayou were mostly mullet. Greek divers arrived in 1905 and made the city the center of the sponge trade. The 2020 census counted about 25,000 residents.
The city's water is a network of bayous that feed the Gulf. Spring Bayou, where the Epiphany cross is thrown each January 6, is ringed by homes and a public seawall, and the Anclote River runs along the north side to the sponge docks and the Gulf.
