About Tierra Verde
Tierra Verde started as 15 mangrove and pine islands near the entrance to Tampa Bay. A dredge-and-fill permit granted in December 1960 let developers pump sand and shell from the bay bottom and merge the keys into one island. It stayed unincorporated, and residents have voted to remain independent of both St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach. The 2020 census counted about 3,800 residents.
Canals now separate its six sections: Monte Cristo, Entrada, Pinellas Bayway, Sands Point, East Shore and West Shore. The Pinellas Bayway connects it north to St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach, and Fort De Soto Park lies to the south.
The shoreline in Tierra Verde
Nearly every waterfront lot here sits on fill pumped from the bay in the 1960s and later, held in by seawalls on the canals. Walls from the early phases are among the older ones on the island.
