About St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg owns about 80,000 linear feet of seawall, roughly 15 miles, and private owners hold an estimated 500,000 linear feet more, according to the city. In 2026 the city launched a Seawall Master Plan to inspect and shore up its own walls.
Hurricane Helene pushed a 6.3-foot surge into the city in September 2024, flooding about 10,700 homes, and Milton damaged nearly 4,900 more two weeks later. Neighborhoods on the bayous and bay, from Snell Isle and Venetian Isles to Shore Acres and Coquina Key, took the worst of it.

St. Pete's waterfront spans 1920s neighborhoods built on filled mangrove islands, postwar canal subdivisions and newer bayfront homes. Wall age and construction vary widely even within one neighborhood.

Elevation and seawalls often go together
